As I am watching some of the very early network Dawson Feud's from the first few years, it seems like the set is darker then it would be later on in the run. Am I seeing things, or was the set indeed darker in the first few years?

I'm no expert in broadcasting but I'd guess that it could either be set changes, lighting, or cameras/taping media. I could be totally wrong on that but I'm sure over 8 years some things were bound to have improved (sound effects and audio sure have).
Actually, the set appears to be brighter in the '77 daytime run than the '81 syndicated run. Who knows?

correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Dawson Feud tape in two different studios during it's 9 years on the air? If so, maybe that had something to do with it.

I know of only one studio change. Don't know when it was but I don't think anything changed; they moved the same set from one studio to the next.

Family Feud for it's first month, taped at (I think) the Vine street theater. I'm not sure exactly where, but I DO know that FEUD was taped somewhere else before moving to ABC Television Center. It was the same time (give or take one day) when the Zeitsoff family started their 5+ day reign. The tell tale sign of the studio change is this... at first, the camera tilts UP when shooting Richard in the monologue. Later on, the camera tilts DOWN on Richard. Another sign can also be seen at the beginning of the show. When Gene Wood says..."the FAM'LYYY FEEEUUUUD!" The camera zooms back from the logo on the gameboard to an overall view of the set. At first, the gameboard would be smack in the middle of the shot, and the top half of the shot was all orange. Later on, when the camera zooms back, you can the limelights just above the gameboard and the clapping audience in the same shot. WHEW! I hope I answered your question.
