I don't usually mention the Japanese shows I watch that often for the reason that 99% of you probably don't understand Japanese and wouldn't know what I was talking about but something I found intresting happend that I thought I'd share with you.
This happend on a show called toribia no izumi (Fountain of trivia). I'll give a brief summery of how the show works, it's divided into two parts. One part of the show is where home viewers send in intresting pieces of trivia to the show where it is graded by a panel of four celebrities and a trivia chairman. The second part of the show is where home viewers send in questions to the show for the staff and host to answer.
This intresting little tid-bit happend in the second part of the show. The question the viewer sent in went as follows...I am a huge fan of the show quiz$millionaire (Pronounced kuizu mirinoea in Japanese and yes the dollar sign is between quiz and millionaire) and I was thinking about trying out for it and I was wondering if you could tell me what the most common answer is? If you haven't figured it out already Quiz$Millionaire is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
They then cut to a video where they interviewed one of the main producers of the show.
Fountain of trivia staff: How do you determine what answer goes by which letter?
Producer: All answers are randomly shuffled by our computer.
Fountain of trivia staff: What do you think the most common answer is?
Producer: I have no idea at all since I don't pay attention to it.
They then showed a staff of over 20 people which they hired especially to go through all the videos. As of May 13, 2004 there were 173 episodes made. Over 7,388 question were checked and this was the outcome.
In 4th place was A with 1,304 answers 17.6%
In 3rd place was D with 1,780 answers 24.1%
In 2nd place was B with 2,022 answers 27.4%
In 1st place was C with 2,282 answers 30.9%
So therefore the most common answer in Quiz$Millionaire (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire) is C.
Usually at that point in the show is where the bit ends however Quiz$Millionaire challenged there facts and asked them to bring one of there staff members to the show.
The challenge: answer one question at the top level worth 10,000,000 yen (about $100,000 American)
The catch: No lifelines and that person must answer C no matter. That's right no matter what.
At this point they intro the Quiz$Millionaire show which is almost identical to the American version. Instead of the fly-by shot in New York they do a fly-by shot of the Fuji television studios in Tokyo. When that's over the host and the Fountain of Trivia staff member enters the set. At this point they chat then the host says, "It's time to play Who wants to be a millionaire."
Host: Here is the big question for 10,000,000 yen.
The very first gold medal awarded to Japan was with what event?
A: Softball
B: Judo
C: Gymnastics
D: Tennis
Fountain of trivia staff member (Rushingly says): "C"
Host: "C" are sure about that?
Fountain of trivia staff member: "C!"
Host (Saying it English): Final Answer?
Fountain of trivia staff member (Saying it English): Final Answer.
Then I saw the longest pause in WWTBAM history. It had to last at least a minute.
Host: Too bad. (The music cue for when a contestant loses a millionaire dollar question is played.) It's D.
Then the Trivia chairman grades the question that the viewer sent in. He gave it a 9 out of ten saying that it was very intresting watching it all unfold.
What I wonder is if C is the most common answer in the Japanese version of millionaire I wonder what it is for the American version? Hmmm
I just wish there was some way I could post the video. I have it on Video tape and have no idea how to do the VHS to computer thing. If I can figure how to post it I will. Watching is priceless though. It's one of those things where you don't have to understand Japanese to enjoy it.
