Just watched the Ray Combs Family Feud today on GSN, and they had the 4-digit display over the gameboard, even though the Bullseye round was not in play. I'm assuming they were getting ready for the upcoming Family Feud Challenge, but even so, what number was displayed in that box that required 4 digits?

To my knowledge and viewing experience, this extra digit did absolutely nothing. I have never seen it being used. I have a couple of theories but take them with a grain of salt:
1) They may have intended the Bullseye round to use the bank display as the amount of money each Bullseye question was worth. In this case, the Bullseye board may not have been in the original plans for the game.
2) If a family fails to reach 200 points in Fast Money and they awarded $10 a point instead of $5, the extra digit is required to accomidate a maximum of $1,990.
3) An extra digit would be required if they wanted to have a dollar sign in front of the point value in the bank. This would be unlikely, however, since the family scores weren't changed and they didn't convert points to dollars for the losing family.
Unfortunantly we'll probably never know what this 4th digit's purpose in life was except to simply exist in harmony with its twin siblings.
